About Mary
Mary’s work draws together the threads of her dual heritage, passionate interest in social issues, and her rich life experience. Born in Colonial Gold Coast (now Ghana), Mary had to deal with the culture shock of moving to grow up in 1960’s Britain. She witnessed and absorbed the ground breaking changes in society and culture then taking place.
Bringing up her family later in the UK has motivated Mary to develop work highlighting some of the issues faced by the youngest generation of the African Diaspora in her artistic endeavours, for example in “The Trailblazers” body of work.
Travelling widely and working in Borneo, Norway and Holland have augmented her interest in people, landscapes and nature. It has also renewed her interest in her own ancestral cultural traditions.
Registered blind in 2009, Mary also experiments with ways of working with the challenges of sight loss in her art. She also uses different methods to bring artistic and cultural practices from her dual heritage to her work.
